Ball Square
Who We Are
Ball Square District Association Vision Statement
As written by main organizer, Jeff Shwom
We exist to build a happier, more connected community. A place for everyone to hang out, to advocate for others and themselves, and to create happiness by connecting with others. We create a place that makes Somerville (and South Medford) feel even smaller and more local.
We do this by:
We value the opinions of the residents who live in the area around the district, which includes Somerville and parts of South Medford. They are the local voices that represent the best source for self-governance. Whether an individual, a family, a house, a dorm or other, they speak to the issues that are most important.
We value business owners, entrepreneurs, non-profit organizations, arts and more that help create spaces for the community in our district. They lead with their ideas, their creativity, and vibrancy that allow residents and visitors to thrive.
We work positively with the city to make these voices heard, through formal and informal meetings, city planning advocacy, and connection local and state representatives in our abutting wards and political districts.
In connecting all stakeholders above, we show visitors, from within Somerville and without, that we are a district for inclusion, creativity, fun, and happiness.
We are thankful for the other organizations/humans doing great work in our area, including:
South Medford Residents Together
Josephine Avenue Mailing List
Green Line Extension Working Group (Jim Silva, Jennifer Dorsen)
Somerville Historic Preservation Commission
Eco-Parents of Camberville
Laura Pitone, Jennifer Dorsen, Mark Niedergang and the others who helped started the Ball Square Neighborhood Association

We do this by:
- Organizing social activities and events in and around Ball Square for residents and visitors
- Encourage involvement of businesses, residents and the city in the planning process
- Strives for equity by creating a more lively business district and spaces that bring all city folk together, regardless of income or background
- Promoting and creating art and culture events in businesses
- Having an easy-to-access central information site for the District that can be shared amongst all forms of media (social, person-to-person, etc)
